Great Lakes Botanical Dyes was established by Jacob Frederick- Sorrell in 2022. Jacob, born and raised in Grand Rapids MI, learned respect for nature from a young age. Spending quality time in the outdoors through hunting, fishing, rockhounding, conservation and more, lead him to become an Eagle Scout. Jacob later developed an interest for growing Bonsai trees which in part re-kindled his passion and curiosity with nature. These events were the seeds to Jacob’s grown co-existence with nature, which in turn inspired him to develop his small business Great Lakes Botanical Dyes.
Great Lakes Botanical Dyes utilizes alchemy to derive pigments from biological sources and bind them to natural fibres. Example pigment sources include walnuts, leaves, clay, flowers, chestnuts and much more. Jacob transforms nature into unique wearable art that is a direct representation of the Great Lakes region. All practices by this business are sustainable for the environment and eco-friendly.
Great Lakes Botanical Dyes journey started vending at the Michigan Renaissance fair in Holly. This business has since expanded to many different venues across the Michigan region, with hopes to keep branching out to new states.
